Milan Records has given us some great soundtracks in 2013 like Cliff Martinez’s “Only God Forgives” and Mike Patton’s “The Place Beyond the Pines” and it doesn’t look like they’re slowing down in 2014, starting with the melancholic instrumentals from the film McCanick.

Jóhann Jóhannsson is the sound of Iceland.  His use of minimalism is some of the best I’ve ever heard.  At times, violin bows just barely hit the strings.  He requires patience with his listener, but rewards that patience with beautiful orchestral swells.  Music like this is the initial reason why I got a turntable.  It demands and deserves our full attention.
