RIYL: Chelsea Wolfe, King Woman

Label: Ilk Ither

Ilk Ither may ring a bell to some of you.  Just under a year ago, they released a lathe 7″ by a group called Bent Folk which included a brilliant take on Funkadelic’s Maggot Brain.  There was a raw realness in their scorched recording, and those 25 lathes disappeared quick.

The New Zealand label is back with a live recording from folk artist Womb.  Sparse but powerful, Charlotte Forrester teeters between major and minor chords, hope and anguish, a vulnerable confession to her audience at Newtown Bowls Club.

If you stripped away all of the reverb, the studio trickery and the polish from other goth folk artists like Chelsea Wolfe and King Woman, you would have an artist like Womb, and Ilk Ither’s humble live recording transports you right into the thick of it.  Only 40 of these exist, and more than half of them were sold at the show.  Have a listen to both tracks below.
