RIYL: Shovels & Rope, Mandolin Orange, Iris Dement

Label: Soul Step Records

Jordan and Laurel Lane Eastman, a husband+wife songwriting duo from Nashville, have been building a fanbase for a few years now as Fort Defiance, touring tirelessly around the states (over 250 gigs last year alone) and winning over crowds with their onstage chemistry and transparent authenticity.  Laurel’s uninhibited vocal arrangements remind me of a young Iris Dement, a pure and honest voice in a town whose scene is known for the opposite.  Add some banjos, classic harmonies and bleeding heart lyrics and you’ve got yourself a blue ribbon combo.  Fans of Shovels and Rope and Mandolin Orange will find plenty to love here.

Fort Defiance will be putting out a full-length this Spring, and to hype that release, Soul Step Records has a limited 7″ on ‘cool mint’ wax for your collections.  As is the case with SSR product, the majority of these records go to their subscribers, so if you want in on this one, you’ll need to hurry.  I doubt they last until the end of the week.  Check out the two tracks below and grab a slab after the ‘buy’ link.
