Exorbitantly dark, nostalgic, and graceful throughout, the first single “South” from Damien Jurado‘s new album In the Shape of a Storm does nothing less than reaffirm that he is one of the best songwriters in the business. The rhythmic and light acoustic guitar stands out with simple 3/4 time that reminisce a brooding story a sailor would tell over a pint of barleywine… “No Girl of Mine is gunna see me cry, she’d be better off seeing me dead.”  Jurado mediates on memories of the darkness that fear, grief, and loneliness bring.  Altogether, the words and simplicity of “South” position this album to be beautifully cold and introspective.
