For a lot of folks in the states last year, Benjamin Clementine’s experimental baroque pop slid into their consciousness after his collaboration with Gorillaz on Hallelujah Money. A Mercury Prize winner in 2015 for his debut album At Least For Now, nothing out there in our modern musical landscape sounded quite like him. His background is also quite harrowing, living homeless for years on end, busking in London and France and writing music all along the way. Clementine’s alien operatic vocal style marries perfectly to the vaudevillian symphonies that back him, a formula both singular and timeless.
Clementine’s sophomore release I Tell A Fly was one of my favorite albums of 2017 and, for many months, I couldn’t track down the mysterious limited clear vinyl variant. Finally, I found a link to the sole French distro FNAC that carries the edition. You’ll need to use Google Translate to get through the prompts and Paypal doesn’t seem to work well for this particular international order, but my debit card worked. It’s pretty damn pricey after shipping pushing $50 total, but I think it’ll be worth every penny. Check out the entire album below on Spotify and watch some of the album’s music videos.
Clear vinyl edition.
