I discovered Monotreme Records back when This Will Destroy You released their intense second album ‘Tunnel Blanket’ in 2011 on some gorgeous clear/black splatter vinyl. Â Since then, I’ve made an effort to keep updated on their releases, which consist mostly of melodic instrumental stuff.
I feel like this Barzin album is a change of pace for the label, dipping their toes in acoustic songwriter waters. Â This first track reminds me of the Mutual Benefit album that took everybody by surprise this year.
Since Monotreme Records are based out of London, it’s going to be a tad more expensive for us yanks. Â Still, this first track is quite lovely, and you can download it for free HERE.
I hope all of you vinyl lovers have had a very Merry Christmas, and your dreams will be filled with sugar plums and estate sales with .50 cent vinyl bins full of your favorite bands.
The new album features some of Toronto’s finest musicians. Sandro Perri lends a hand as a producer. Tony Dekker (Great Lake Swimmers), Daniela Gesendheit (Snowblink) and Tamara Lindeman
(Weather Station) appear on backing vocals on several tracks. Karen Graves (Hayden) provides a lovely, understated string arrangement The time taken, and the help received from a cast of stellar musicians, has resulted in his strongest record to date. “I feel I’ve been trying to make this album since I first started making records,” says Barzin.
The album will be available on CD and digital formats, as well as a limited 180 gm vinyl LP (100 black, 300 white vinyl) which includes a free album CD. Pre-orders from the Monotreme Records website will also receive 2 digital downloads of previously unreleased tracks, plus a free sticker and pin whilst supplies last.
