RIYL: Kung Fu & Afrobeat
Label: Daptone Records
Brooklyn Afrobeat collective Antibalas are widely credited as one the most influential groups among its genre’s torchbearers. A transient line-up from one album and tour to the next, Antibalas founder Martin Perna has helped illuminate afrobeat and Nigerian dance music to a much wider audience over the 20+ years they’ve been around, creating a legendary live show in the process.
After a significant 5-year gap between albums, Antibalas released 2012’s self-titled album on Daptone Records, and the label has been their home ever since. They released the beloved Where the Gods Are In Peace in 2017 and are now quickly following up with Fu Chronicles, 6 tracks connecting and celebrating Chinese martial arts and Nigerian afrobeat. This stuff cooks, man. Listen to Fight Am Finish below and pick up some gorgeous maroon splatter vinyl from Daptone after the ‘buy’ link.
