RIYL: Mount Eerie, Planning for Burial, Have a Nice Life
Label: The Flenser
After a cassette-only debut release in 2015, Portland singer/songwriter Kyle Bates is embarking on a much-needed follow-up. His move to record label The Flenser makes a lot of sense. Similar to Dan Barrett’s stint with a life-threatening illness, Bates suffered a significant mental breakdown and was prescribed antipsychotic drugs to help alleviate the looming darkness of paranoia and suicide around him.
As you would expect, you can hear that influence in his art. His music sounds like The Red House Painters’ album cover for Down Colorful Hill, a heavy, gloomy beauty that resonates long after the last notes fade. Bits of shoegaze perch in the layers, but this project is uniquely Kyle Bates vision. Fans of Barrett’s work in Have a Nice Life, Black Wing and Giles Corey will love Drowse with every fiber of their being. Let the aching begin.
