RIYL: WAR, Delicate Steve, Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Label: City Slang

Over the past decade-plus of their career, White Denim has constantly evolved without compromising their idiosyncratic sound, and Performance, the group’s eighth studio release, is no exception. In their new Austin studio, Radio Milk, the band cooked up nine fresh tunes that fully embrace the contemporary rock ethos, but are still seared with the the grill marks of the their 70’s-influenced southern sound and seasoned with their signature intricate riffs and textures. Speaking of food, you can read about me awkwardly conducting an interview with James Petralli (songwriter, guitarist) and Steve Terebecki (bassist) here. With the addition of the drummer Conrad Choucroun and keyboardist Michael Hunter for the album sessions, White Denim ventures into some new territory, arriving at fantastic results with some of the record’s finest moments coming in the form of synth breaks and breezy soul jaunts. But longtime fans make no mistake, there’s still plenty of White Denim’s brand of blistering guitars and uptempo rock numbers to be heard on Performance.
