RIYL: Aimee Mann, Patty Griffin, The Wild Reeds, Iris Dement, Phoebe Bridgers

Label: Dualtone

Ever since she graced our ears with her debut album Stranger In The Alps I’ve been hooked on Phoebe Bridgers, so when this popped up and I looked through the tracklist, I knew it was an instant buy. But this tracklist is pretty impressive, my completist mentality aside; Aimee Mann, Patty Griffin, up and comers The Wild Reeds, Iris Dement and so many more.

As Tom turns 70 in December of this month, Dualtone saw it fit to pay tribute to the complex and often misunderstood artist. “Tom is a true original as a songwriter, singer, and arranger. There’s just no one like him,” says Dualtone CEO Scott Robinson. “Beneath some of the layers of sound and his truly unique vocal phrasing are some of the most beautiful and heartfelt songs I’ve ever heard. After some great creative discussions many years back with an old publishing colleague, the concept of focusing on the sheer beauty of these songs by having them interpreted by a group of amazing artists with stunning voices, was a must-do project.”

The stunning vocals are highlighted in the two singles released. The Patty Griffin’s rendition of “Ruby Arms” is a haunting lullaby and through a female voice propels it into different and sometimes darker territories. “Downtown Train” through the lens of Courtney Marie Andrews is more urgent and crisp than the original version and after a few bars, it starts sticking in your head like a song you don’t want to forget. The tracklist is below and it’s currently available in limited edition white vinyl. Enjoy.
