De-Loused In The Comatorium is the debut full-length from Texas-based The Mars Volta. Originally released back in June of 2003, this album is based around a short story written by lead singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and sound manipulation artist Jeremy Michael Ward. De-Loused In The Comatorium is the tale of Cerpin Taxt, a man who enters a week-long coma after overdosing from a mixture of morphine and rat poison. The story itself actually alludes to the death of El Paso, Texas artist and friend – Julio Venegas.
This is the only The Mars Volta album to feature founding member Jeremy Michael Ward, as he was found dead of an apparent heroin overdose only a month before the album’s release. It’s also worth mentioning that for this particular record Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers has stepped in to play bass as Eva Gardner had departed from the band.
The original copies from the initial Silver vinyl release in 2003 (standard weight; /15,000) through Gold Standard Laboratories are now going for exorbitant prices. If you venture over to Discogs you’ll find 16 for sale w/ the lowest price tag being $150. Although $40.99 seems steep as well, I thought I’d mention this bit of information for you to know what’s up for grabs here. With this much lower price tag, you’ll be getting a 180g Silver version which is also numbered.
180g Silver 2xLP version can be purchased via the Buy Now link, just below.

De-Loused in the Comatorium is the debut full-length studio album by American progressive rock band The Mars Volta and was originally released in 2003. Based on a short story written by lead singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and sound manipulation artist Jeremy Michael Ward, the concept album is an hour-long tale of Cerpin Taxt, a man who enters a week-long coma after overdosing on a mixture of morphine and rat poison.
The title of the album is taken from the lyrics of the song "Eunuch Provocateur", which is included on the band's debut EP, Tremulant. The cover artwork is by Storm Thorgerson, who also designed the artwork for the album Frances the Mute. The album is co-produced by Rick Rubin and The Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. As Eva Gardner, the original bassist, parted ways with the band, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea is featured as bass guitar player on the album.
