After 14 years of lying dormant in a vat of fertilizer underneath Sunnyside Farms in Washington, Virginia, Neil Hagerty and Jennifer Herrema emerged once again above ground in 2015 as Royal Trux, with dirt in their fingernails and distortion in their ribcages. A few years later, they managed a full-length of live cuts with their longtime friends over at Drag City, 2017’s Platinum Tips + Ice Cream, and it felt like they were picking up right where they left off in 2001, full steam ahead. Soon after, the group signed to Fat Possum Records and WHAM…we’ve got a new studio album coming out this year. Titled White Stuff, leave every expectation you have at the door. It’s gonna get gloriously weird.
The title track lays down a muddy riff over a straightforward back beat, but Get Used to This makes a neck-shattering sharp turn as they put their Truxian spin on hip hop. Must be heard to believe. Standout track Every Day Swan is an amalgamation of everything Royal Trux did so well prior to their first break-up, cross-pollenating any and all genres within their reach and contorting them into submission. Keep in mind that this band has been around for over 30 years now and they still sound fresh AF.
