“He has tasted good and evil in your bedrooms and your bars,
And he’s traded in tomorrow for today.
Runnin’ from his devils, Lord, and reachin’ for the stars,
And losin’ all he’s loved along the way.
But if this world keeps right on turnin’ for the better or the worse,
And all he ever gets is older and around.
From the rockin’ of the cradle to the rollin’ of the hearse,
The goin’ up was worth the comin’ down.

Kris Kristofferson

Whenever I look at that beautiful cover from Muchacho, I’m reminded of ‘the pilgrim’ that Kristofferson wrote about throughout his career.  We’ve all known that man too.  At some point in our lives, we might’ve even been that man ourselves.  He’s the one at the bar with the best stories.  He’s the one on the curb at sunrise that manages a laugh through the aching hangover.  He’s always generous with his pack of smokes and, despite how down on his luck he is, always manages to buy a round.  He’s also the one that never changes.  As your peers get promotions, gym memberships, wives and children, he’s still calling you at midnight and beckoning you back to the life you used to know…and of course, the first round’s on him.  You both wish you were in the other’s shoes, at least for the night.

These beautiful tragedies run plentiful in Phosphorescent’s music, with every soaring strum from the pedal steel to Matthew Houck’s fragile, crackling vocals.  It’s the kind of majestic country that feels as relevant to us as it did to our grandfathers.  In 30 years, we’ll still be hearing Phosphorescent at the local dive bar at 1:55 am, just before it closes down…when we’re making the worst mistakes of the night and knowing damn well we’ll pay for it tomorrow…but damn it all, right?  One more dance for the road.
