RIYL: Freakbeat, Mod, 60/70's Rock n' Roll

Label: Heavy Soul Records / Jett Plastic Recordings

UK’s favourite freakbeat/rawk’n roll revivalist Paul Orwell should be no new name in your book if you’ve been paying attention. The guy has way too much awesome tunes up his sleeve not to pay notice. His flair for the rugged and raw sounds of the late 60’s / early 70’s has already spawned quite a few deadly slabs through his UK-label Heavy Soul Records, and this time he’s directing a pile of 7″s directly to the States as well!  Jett Plastic Recordings has seen the light, got their shades on and is splitting this release with Heavy Soul.

The title-track “Speak of the Devil” is a total banger, brimful of attitude and gritty goodness. Paul and his band the Nightfalls lays down a bluesy backbeat and adds a ton of fuzzy guitars and organs straight outta the garage. Hell, there’s even a few horns and strings attached this time around! The production is as always spot on, simply adding a next level to the raw factor of the songs.  I bet Paul probably had a pretty clear vision of the whole product way ahead of release (being an old art-school attendant), and both the artwork and the video really adds to the attitude of the tracks.

Each variants of this 7″ comes with an exclusive b-side and different artwork

The Details

FROM JETT PLASTIC RECORDINGS:
PAUL ORWELL - 'SPEAK OF THE DEVIL' B/W 'THESE ARE THE GOOD TIMES' 7"

'Speak Of The Devil' is the first 7" from Paul Orwell's album "SMUT." Orwell, who's not a stranger to the freakbeat stylings of yesteryear, is able to make music that's simultaneously rooted in both the past and the present. The A-Side of this 7", 'Speak Of The Devil', highlights Orwell's knack to write a new Devil-Disco Rock 'n Roll classic, while the B-Side, 'These Are The Good Times', appears as a US exclusive B-Side.

Also released by Heavy Soul! Records in London, England, the UK version of 'Speak Of The Devil' showcases a different B-Side, 'Street Legal'. Both tunes are equally brilliant and neither will appear on Orwell's 'SMUT' album, which will be released much later this year.

Get in on the ground floor and get raunchy with Orwell's SMUT stylings!
