RIYL: San Fransisco, Avalon, Cannibal Holocaust, Teenage Alien Blues

Label: Jagjagjagjagjagjagjaguwar

Self-aware, smug and impossible to ignore,¬†California’s scrappiest rock and roll duo, Sam France and Jonathan Rado, are back with album number six.¬† The title of this one begs the question “Is Foxygen over as we know it?”¬† “Is this the breakup album?”¬† “Are the drugs not working?”¬† Like many other fans of this little engine that could called Foxygen, I have a love/hate thing going with them.¬† Their will to be weird is admirable, their songs are instantly memorable, but their overt self-awareness is sometimes a bit too much for me to chew.¬† Still, I come back to the songs.¬† On Lankershim, San Fransisco, Make It Known and many others can still bring my stone-faced elitism to its knees.¬† Foxygen are a faithful reminder that rock and roll is fun.¬† And sometimes sloppy.

Expect Seeing Other People to be their introspective album, their moment of clarity, their attempt at sincerity.¬† If it’s a success or a failure matters not when it comes to Foxygen.¬†¬†They’ve always walked the trembling tightrope between both with full commitment to the cause.¬† Here’s to hoping it’s another good one.¬† And not the last.

Pink vinyl awaits you after the ‘buy’ link.¬† There is also a bundle option HERE if you¬†get off on t-shirts and CDs.¬† Get to it.
