We drink a lot of beer here in Austin. Â A lot. Â The bars and pubs are plentiful, and more and more garages are host to homebrews. Â It’s not that we’re alcoholics. Â Well, some of us are, but the main reason we love drinking beer is because it’s communal. Â You share a beer, you share a conversation. Â Strangers and old friends alike. Â My friends and I have a favorite dive bar called The Horseshoe Lounge. Â Dirty floors and filthy jokes…that kind of vibe, ya dig? Â It’s been around for 50 years, and this weekend…she closed her doors for good.
It didn’t go out without a fight, though. Â We made a celebration out of it. Â It would’ve been a sad day had it not been for the droves of blues and rock groups that came to meet the regulars for a good old-fashioned dust up. Â They were all bands like Duck Duck Grey Duck, bands with no pretensions, nothing to prove and no agenda but having a good time. Â Soul food for the eardrums. Â Why do we love bands like The Alabama Shakes? Â Because they sound like our friends. Â Duck Duck Grey Duck are in that kin, the kind of band that’d play in your backyard if you paid em in barbecue and whiskey ‘n cokes.
Listen to the album below, and stay for a while. Â Next round’s on me.
