RIYL: Johnny Cash
Label: Soul Step Records
We all love the Johnny Cash covers, from Reznor’s Hurt to Soundgarden’s Rusty Cage, but the moment I watched Ray Charles take Ring of Fire for his own on Johnny Cash’s home turf in 1970, I realized the insane potential when the tables were turned. Since then, I always get a kick out of an artist who not only covers a Cash classic, but transforms it into something entirely new and refreshing. Brian Owens is one of those artists.
Standing up to everything from Sunday Morning Coming Down to Cry Cry Cry to Long Black Veil, Owens throws these classics into his own brand of sweaty soul, fit with stirring gospel harmonies and horn sections. It ain’t easy to breathe new life into a song as classic as a Cash traditional, but hot DAMN, does Brian Owens sound f-ing good. Quite a few other music fans agree with me, seeing as how the color vinyl sold out in hours, but about 300 copies of the black vinyl are still available after the ‘buy’ link. I wouldn’t expect them to last much longer either, so get to it.
