RIYL: Junior Murvin, Lee "Scratch" Perry, The Melodians
Label: Mad Decent / Daptone Records
NY reggae revivalists The Frightnrs, despite the untimely loss of band member Daniel Klein in 2016, are still enjoying success with posthumous releases and new singles. Their lofi dub production mixed with barber shop harmonies is instantly recognizable, a left field sound and technique that could just as easily place them smack dab in 1977 somewhere on tour with Junior Murvin as it could on the Daptone roster.
The previous zoetropic 7″ from The Frightnrs sold out super quick and now goes for 5x on the secondary market. Daptone Record is already out of stock on their site, so grab a copy from Mad Decent after the ‘buy’ link and be quick about it. Check out some footage of the zoetropic effect in action below and listen to the track in full.
