The son of Ugandan refugees, London-based soul psychedelicist Michael Kiwanuka was born with a bleeding heart and a body of talents way beyond his years. A studier of the archetypes, Hendrix, Withers, Redding, Havens, Dylan and the rest of their ilk, Kiwanuka wanted to harness those classic sounds and drive them through a new lens. On his 2016 sophomore effort Love & Hate, the people listened. Most well-known for the hit single Cold Little Heart, the theme song for HBO’s Big Little Lies, word spread fast about Kiwanuka’s fiery soul performances painted with a vintage stroke. Three years later, we finally have the anticipated third album simply titled Kiwanuka.
No longer part of Polydor, the new album marks the first endeavor with label Interscope Records, no doubt a huge move for Kiwanuka. But will this new move fan his fire or suppress it? I can’t imagine the man risking his integrity even slightly, so my hopes are high. One thing’s for sure, though…if you want the colored wax, you’re gonna pay Interscope prices. Just shy of $40 before shipping, give your wallet a kiss and smash that ‘buy’ link if you dare. Check out first single You Ain’t the Problem below. It’s f-ing amazing.
Michael Kiwanuka releases his third studio album on 25th October 2019.
