RIYL: Mac Demarco, Homeshake, Whitney, Unknown Mortal Orchestra

Label: Painted Pony Records

If you dig on DeMarco, hanker for Homeshake and get weak-kneed for Whitney, there’s no doubt you’ll love the piss out of Hether, a solo project from 24-year-old L.A. songsmith Paul Castelluzzo. He gained momentum almost immediately with 2019’s Hether Who? EP, an instantly-addicting 6-tracker coasting from one warped slow jam to the next. Castelluzzo’s delicate vocal delivery and lazy river guitar tones are as seductive as a moonlit gondola ride, bursting with colorful chord progressions and distinctive psychedelic undertones. When U Loved Me was a fan favorite from the EP, and now you can buy it on vinyl. Rejoice.

I’m not too into the 7″ format, but 1) this is the first vinyl release from Hether, and 2) it contains an unreleased track on the b-side. Is $15 a lot for a 7″? Sure, I guess. Think of all the gas money you’re saving during our current isolation era, though. Spend that skrilla, baby! If the world’s gonna end, I’m gonna usher it in poolside with daiquiri in hand and Hether in the headphones.
