RIYL: Nicolas Jaar, Dave Harrington, Against All Logic
Label: Matador Records
It’s been almost 8 years since Nicolas Jaar and Dave Harrington joined forces as DARKSIDE, a duo with such a monumental impact on experimental electronic music that it felt wrong calling it a side project. Blending dark ambient textures with clean blues-inspired guitar tones, DARKSIDE took electronic music to a realm no one could have predicted. Brian Eno meets Dire Straits? Who’d have guessed that shit would sound so good?
The long gap between albums proved pretty lucrative for both Jaar and Harrington. The Dave Harrington group produced two wonderful full-lengths, 2016’s Become Alive and 2019’s Pure Imagination, No Country, among other remix singles and solo works. Nicolas Jaar threw 5 full-lengths and 3 soundtracks at us, further explored sampling and dance music with his Against All Logic project, started his own label Other People and produced numerous exceptional records for other artists including FKA twigs. Needless to say, the boys been busy. How they had time for a sophomore DARKSIDE album is beyond me.
Here’s the bad news. The band’s exclusive “glass” colorway, limited to only 500, has already sold out this morning. Matador Records, however, has a white marbled variant for a cool $25 that can be purchased after the ‘buy’ link. Vinyl Me, Please has their own exclusive variant HERE, but for some odd reason, it’s gonna run you upwards of $50. I dunno, man. Is that foil stamp made of f-ing gold? No word on the quantity pressed for Matador, but the VMP version is limited to 2000 copies. The ‘buy’ link leads you to Matador ’cause they always have great prices. Check out the two available tracks below. It’s gonna be a Top 10 for the year, I assure you.
