RIYL: The Raincoats, Bush Tetras, Le Tigre, Sleater Kinney
Label: End of Time Records
Seattle punk trio VATS has teamed up with hometown label End of Time Records for a full-length of post-punk¬†brimming with surreal lyricism and an unrefined sheen reminiscent of the genre’s golden years in the late 70s.
Any studio limitations the group may have faced is matched with an unbridled and passionate delivery. ¬†The guitars and vocals dance between¬†dissonance and melody¬†and that¬†murky bass riff in the title track¬†kindles the¬†same DIY immediacy that I felt when I first heard The Raincoats’ 1979 post-punk classic. ¬†You can almost taste the raw joy in the layers. ¬†And similar to other groups like Le Tigre and Sleater Kinney, this is the side of punk that you can dance to.
Pick up a copy of the record either on red or black wax after the ‘buy’ link. ¬†Both are limited to 250. ¬†All ye tapeheads, there’s also a cassette available.
