RIYL: Swearin’, Radiator Hospital, Forth Wanderers
Label: Father/Daughter Records
Indie-pop-punk champs SPORTS and shoegazey rockers Plush are teaming up for a new tease of a release. The Father/Daughter labelmates have just a few tracks due out in October, pitched as “the perfect way to hold fans over,” but more likely to leave us unbearably anxious for more!
The SPORTS opener “Making It Right” first saw light last year as an acoustic demo on a compilation but has since matured into a full-band number with perfectly placed dynamic shifts throughout, plus, the pleasantly surprising shimmer of synth in the stadium-worthy first chorus. In signature SPORTS fashion, songwriter Carmen Perry lays her scenario out matter-of-factly over the band’s power-packed playing. She talks through an episode of relationship trouble with a sense of ambivalence rather than pure sadness or anger, almost acquiescing in its inevitability. It’s this combination of forthright delivery and emotional uncertainty, leaving the listener to ponder all the thoughts and intentions behind the words, that keeps SPORTS tugging at the heartstrings like no other.
East and West coasts join together as one on this limited 7" split out October 20. SPORTS (Philadelphia, PA) return with two new bangers ("Making It Right" & "Calling Out") and Plush (San Francisco, CA) lends the stunning "50/50 20/20". The 7" is pressed on white vinyl, limited to 500 copies.
