Eva Moolchan’s sound was¬†immediate as soon as she dropped her self-titled debut in 2014.¬† A master of minimal post-punk, her project knows as Sneaks consisted of her brooding bass licks, a drum machine and her ‘half coo-half snarl’ vocal delivery.¬† The tracks¬†were rarely over a minute and a half, but that proved to be plenty of time to leave every dance floor a sweaty mess.¬† In 2017, Sneaks signed to Merge Records and broke into a more mainstream audience with It’s a Myth¬†and leadout single Look Like That, a spacious kraut-synth¬†head-nodder pulsating with refurbished post-punk cool.¬† One of my favorite songs of the year for sure.
Following up quickly after It’s A Myth is Highway Hypnosis,¬†a complete 180 from her previous minimal lofi style.¬† Moolchan has shed some of her post-punk influences for a more hip hop-influenced aesthetic.¬† Studio production has also been kicked up a significant notch or four, choosing multi-layered¬†vocal treatments, drifting piano accompaniment¬†and otherworldly ambient textures.¬† It’s a very bold move for an artist who has just begun to grow her fanbase, but I foresee it working for her.¬† Super cool move.¬† I’m gonna miss the post punk era, but excited to hear the rest of this new beginning.
