RIYL: Useless Eaters, Wavves, Thee Oh Sees
Label: Six Tonnes De Chair Records
South African garage punk duo Make-Overs formed back in 2010 and have since churned out a whopping TEN full-lengths, catching the ears of DIY labels across the globe including the legendary HoZac Records, KRNGY and Heel Turn. Their incredible work ethic has earned them the title of one of South Africa’s most beloved independent bands, and their newest 7″ release from France’s Six Tonnes De Chair Records exemplifies their varied styles.
Side A’s title track propels off the starting line before you can even catch your breath, sprinting along a crunchy lofi riff and synth lead that doesn’t let up until the finish, ending in a flurry of burnt flesh, bodily fluids and broken bones. I hear a little Thee Oh Sees inspiration, some Useless Eaters and a dab of the smirky-lipped Wavves. Side B Time Warp makes a sharp detour, cruising along a moody, surfy guitar lead that reminds me of early B-52s.
The worst damn part of 7″s like these is that it’s over way before you’re ready, but thankfully you can just pop this bad boy right back over and start the ride over. Only 100 of the yellow 7″s are available, but if those sell out before you can grab one, there are 200 copies on black vinyl as well. There’s also a bundle for both colorways if you’re looking for a gift for someone’s stocking this year. I’d be happy to send you my address through a private message to make things easier. xoxo
