RIYL: The Faint, Sleigh Bells, MSTRKRFT
Label: Warner Bros / Last Gang Records
Ontario’s deadliest duo is back in the spotlight again with a third album, a quicker follow-up than 2014’s The Physical World, released a decade after their instaclassic debut smashed us all in the teeth with electro punk brass knuckles.
Fans of the band’s rawkier roots are in for a bit of a surprise with newest single Never Swim Alone, a raw hip-hop inspired groove carrying Sebastien Grainger’s manic falsetto scream.  If you close your eyes, he sounds like a feral James Murphy in the middle of a sweaty most pit.  I like the new direction, but I can certainly see the more die-hard DFA1979 bros feeling alienated by it.  What do yall think?  If you dig what these two Canucks are dishing out, now’s the time to grab the white/black split wax.  No quantity mentioned, but we’ll press the label for more intel.
