On August 19, 1960, two stray dogs from Russia were sent up in space.  They were part of a team of dogs beginning in the 50s to test whether it was safe for humans to sit in a tin can far above the world.  Belka and Strelka were the first pair of dogs to make it back to Earth alive, and they immediately became heroes in the USSR.  This album is dedicated to those two dogs, who were flying around space way before Major Tom, way before it was hip, and waaay before it was even considered safe.  невероятный!!

Testbild!, a 9-piece avant jazz pop group from Stockholm, has done an amazing job visualizing Belka & Strelka’s extraordinary story, and as you might expect, there are all kinds of funky space vibes going on here.  It sounds like Deerhoof, Stereolab and Royksopp having a pizza party on Jupiter.  The krautrocker hooks on The Moon and the Stars are quite irresistible, and they even throw a little ambient intermission in the middle full of sonar blips and chirps.

Despite this being an international release, I’ll happily pay the extra shipping to have this one on my turntable.  249 copies pressed.  Get it or don’t.
