In 2012, Kevin Parker and the boys galloped on the back of a two-headed elephant, painting the surrounding sand dunes with the multi-colored guitar shreddery we know as Lonerism. And the peasants rejoiced. In 2014, the band released Live Versions, a telling live set that began to show the Aussie unit seesawing between two prominent influences…’the axe’ versus ‘the synth’. A year later, it appeared that the latter had won the battle as the ‘Pala leapt off the elephant and landed on a glittering dance floor. Their stylistic shift with Currents threw the Earth’s axis off-balance for a brief moment as the rockers voiced their opposition and a new fanbase began to grow underneath the wreckage, but the war was over almost as soon as it began. Currents became a bonafied modern classic and a splintered genre of psychedelia was given a refreshing renovation.

Here were are 4 1/2 years later. After three new tracks trickled through the echo chamber in 2019 (the third of which dropped TODAY), it should be well-established that the dance floor still feels comfortable AF for Tame Impala, but the party’s been moved to the upper deck of the yacht. Kevin’s studio sheen is about as glossy as a freshly-waxed Ferrari Testarossa. Those synths still glisten like an icy Pepsi straight out of the cooler. Almost a decade into their career and it still feels like Kevin and the Krew are 3 steps ahead. Say g’day to The Slow Rush.

But what do you think? Is $40 too much of an investment to throw down for this new hot piece of psychedelic synthwave or are you buying 3 copies? Rough Trade has a blue and red variant HERE for $32.99. There’s also a forest green variant you can pick up on various distro sites like THIS one. The band have their own splotchy splattery variant up for grabs after the ‘buy’ link if you wanna get your fix straight from the source. If more colorways come to the light, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, bend those ears to this brand new single It Might Be Time.
