Super Furry Animals are one of my favorite psychedelic bands and not only that, but they’re from Wales – where half my ancestry lies. After fifteen years, Mwng is getting a re-issue after being issued on the band’s own Placid Casual label. Mwng is unique for a couple of reasons, the first is this entire album is sung in Welsh. Have you ever seen Welsh? I’ve tried (am still trying) to learn the old Cymraeg every now and then to fulfill the duties of my Welsh ethnicity. It looks like it’s straight from the Middle Ages. It is a surreal language to look at/read, much less hear which is perfect considering SFA’s specialty is psychedelia – surprisingly enough, this is the only album they have that’s exclusively Welsh. Now, the second reason it’s unique – it was praised in the UK’s House of Commons for its cultural significance, due to its sole use of the Welsh language. Mwng, all in all, is a solid album from a solid band which you should consider buying. The 3xLP is quite pricey so it’s understandable if you go down to the normal single LP reissue or the CD. Check out the Spotify stream of Mwng below and see what you think of it. Cheers!
Originally released in 2000 on the band’s own Placid Casual label (between deals with Creation and Sony), the Super Furries career-defining fourth album Mwng was the band’s only Welsh language long player. It reached Number 11 in the UK album charts and was their highest selling record globally up to that point. It remains the biggest selling Welsh language album of all time. On its original release, the record was praised in an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons for its significant part in promoting the language and culture of Wales.
