RIYL: Pond, Gum, Ariel Pink, Mac Demarco
Label: Chapter Music
Over 4 years after his debut full-length The Loving Gaze, Australian singer/songwriter Ben Montero is back with a sophomore effort, and it’s backed by some pretty big names. Co-produced with Jay Watson (Tame Impala, Pond, Gum), engineered by the Grammy award-winning Riccardo Damian and recorded at Mark Ronson’s Tileyard Studios in London, Performer already feels like a big leap forward in Montero’s sound. Vibrations drips with Nick Allbrook-esque psych weirdness, but still holds as much pop accessibility as The Flaming Lips’ Yoshimi era. Meanwhile, Tokin’ the Night Away pops with the quirkiness of Mac Demarco and Ariel Pink, but throws in some heavenly harmonies to make it a Montero original.
Chapter Music has copies on limited ‘frog green’ vinyl while supplies last. Looking forward to hearing the rest of this one! Check out the music video for Tokin’ below and be sure to grab a slab after the ‘buy’ link.
