RIYL: The Allah-Las, Tommy James & the Shondells, The Summer of Love
Label: Burger Records
This past weekend in Austin, a thundering bummer of a headline adorned my Twitter feed. Â Levitation Fest was cancelled, a mere 24 hours before the festival was supposed to start. Â Our very own Sly writer, Sindre Ernst, traveled all the from Norway for the event. Â Quickly, though, the powers-that-be gathered themselves and splintered off all of the bands into smaller venues around town and, for many, their weekends were saved. Â The weather cleared up, the brown acid was avoided and the bands played on.
One of the bands I was introduced to was Levitation Room, a psych roots 4-piece from East L.A.  Their debut full-length on Burger Records was released in March of this year, and it’s packed to the brim with the acid-soaked spirit of late 60s California.  Julian Porte’s vocals channel a bloodshot-eyed Tommy James circa 1969 when he shed his mole suits and donned a dashiki.  If you’re into the sedated surf licks from The Allah-Las and dig the organs, jangly guitars and baked harmonies from rock and roll’s most drug-fueled era, Levitation Room is an essential listen for you.
