This one is already a strong contender to my favourite album of the year!
Aussie Psych/Garage outfit King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard is an extremely productive bunch, and has released 5 full-length albums over the last three years. Their previous efforts has been jammed into existence, and are full of mindblowing, quirky tunes and sounds. Recording “I’m In Your Mind Fuzz”, they had the tracks laid down in advance, which makes this a much more focused and together effort. There’s still enough weirdness going on in here to seriously trip out by, but it’s much clearer that they have a plan for world domination with this album (for the first time there’s also three labels releasing their album worldwide).
The four first tracks just flows into eachother with a similar uptempo groove, divided by pitchshifts and otherworldy weirdness.. Epic! The rest of the album are more stand alone tracks, and they’re all beautiful mindbenders both in production, and arrangements. There’s still quite a few musical similarities to fellow aussies Tame Impala and Pond in here, but it sounds like they’ve been digging into Thee Oh Sees massive catalogue. Still there’s no doubt that it’s your favourite “Completely fried theremin wielding psychopaths” taking control of your mind.. HIGHLY recommended listening throughout!
As previously mentioned there’s three labels involved in this release, and all Vinyl editions are physically different. Castleface does the US, and has this Limited Fluoride Fogbank Edition (A Side Coke Bottle Green, B Side White) as well as standard Black Vinyl, while Heavenly Recordings takes care of the EU/UK market (first pressing on Black Vinyl with Glow-In-The-Dark artwork). The Aussie edition was put out by Flightless as usual (on Blood Red and Green Splattered Wax), but this one is long gone already..
4 clicks and we’re off - galloping through realms on a phase-shifted, hydra-headed, many armed and muscular monster. This Australian beast of a band with a bear of a name and a thick herd of band members delivers many things to us on this warped song cycle - a skeleton of propulsive kraut-beat fleshed out with a liberal dose of citric sweetness, flutes and harmonicas bleeding through the mix often and welcomingly, tons of wah and a hero’s journey/Heavy Metal early 80’s fantasy sort of vibe, and many lovely left turns into psychedelic mellowing, both groovily and sometimes with just a dash of DMT dread. The whole thing is just gooey with tape manipulations, phase shifts, and saturations, but there are clearly many tasty tidbits that bubble to the top, and they’re sticky.
Out on Castle Face in the USA, November 11th on Vinyl, CD and Digital. Available in Europe on Heavenly UK and in Australia on Flightless. Limited Flouride Fogbank Edition is A Side Coke Bottle Green, B Side White and is only available here and from the band. Colored vinyl is limited to 2 per customer.
