RIYL: deep earth fuzz, spectral shoegaze, thunder riffs

Label: Little Cloud Records

The inexorable force that is Ancient River is raging this year. Just 6 months ago, the Austin psych duo released After the Dawn, a supremely heavy batch of thunderous shoegaze. Riding on that momentum is the quick follow-up The House of Stone, their 8th full-length as a band. Their trademark 6 to 8-minute fuzz epics have given way to 2-3 melody-driven popgaze, and it suits their style perfectly. First single Hey breathes the punchy charm of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s Psychocandy era without losing the band’s own identity. The following tune Communication swoons with the alt-rock shoegaze sensibilities of Starflyer 59 and DIIV’s Deceiver output, but again, Ancient River’s unrelenting heaviness helps them continue to stand out as an original sound. I have a good feeling this is gonna be my favorite album of theirs to date!
