Every friend group seems to have a specialist of sorts. One guy’s super in to football (or sports in general), one guy’s a foodie, one guy’s a movie buff, one guy knows everything there is to know about drugs, and so on and so forth. If my friends (or people who know me) had to label me as something, they’d most likely call me the hipster or the music guy. Friends ask me all the time about what I’m listening to, what they should be looking out for, what DAW they should buy… you get the point. Sometimes, I have to define genres that are next to unheard of in the mainstream – post-rock is one of them. To easily describe it, I just say post-rock is like a modern take on classical music.
It might seem like a “pleb-like” description for it but think about it: Post-rock bands often consist of formidable ensembles (or members who are adept multi-instrumentalists), they’re almost always purely instrumental and albums are sometimes even divided up in to movements. Mallet Guitars Three, divided up in to four movements, has the grandiosity and enigmatic nature classical music exhibits. The emotions exuded on this album are on a rollercoaster, jumping from worry, to one of tenacity, to sonorous to a curious fusion of unrelenting dour and revitalization.
