I’m glad to be stumbling upon these ambient/drone and neo-classical labels as of late, especially since I can share them with you wonderful people. Gizeh Records is responsible for the pressing of You Stood Up For Victory, We Stood Up For Less (and The Freemartin Calf soundtrack that I gave a plug the other day). This is the sophomore full-length from A-Sun Amissa, whose members are also among the ranks of Glissando and The Rustle of the Stars. There’s two parts to this record and both span roughly twenty minutes a piece. “Part One,” the only track available to preview as far as I know, flirts with very Godspeed-esque post-rock, drone and eerie ambience. “Part One” gives the feeling that the band is in a foggy swamp (or a city in the dark in some noir film), with the wandering notes from Gareth Davis’ bass clarinet. I have a hunch that “Part Two” of this record will not disappoint. Check out “Part One” below and see what you think of it. Cheers!

A-Sun Amissa is a project formed out of Leeds, UK in 2011 by members of Glissando and The Rustle of the Stars.. Built on the foundations of the unknown, a project that encompasses minimalist drones, modern-classical movements and avant-garde tendencies. Richard Knox (Glissando, The Rustle of the Stars, Of Thread & Mist) & Angela Chan (Glissando, The Rustle of the Stars, Tomorrow We Sail) began forming the initial ideas in the Autumn of 2011, moving away from the piano-led ambience of previous outputs.
New album âYou Stood Up For Victory, We Stood Up For Lessâ sees A-Sun Amissa moving in a more dense direction, the drones are heavier, the sound thicker and with the added bass-clarinet of Gareth Davis there a new slightly darker jazz element now to the music.
The two tracks were conceived initially as two drone guitar pieces, following that, work was done on the composition and atmosphere of the tracks adding the bass-clarinet, viola, vocals, field recordings and piano. The finished works produce an unsettling but hypnotic listen with melodies moving in and out of the mix throughout these two pieces.
âYou Stood Up For Victory, We Stood Up For Lessâ is released a year on from A-Sun Amissaâs debut âDesperate in Her Heavy Sleepâ (Gizeh). The band will tour the UK and Europe in February and also play a handful of UK dates with Barn Owl in April.
