RIYL: Tommy James & The Shondells, Jenny Lewis, Ruby Suns, Princess Chelsea

Label: Soul Step Records

15 years and 1 day ago, New Zealand twee pop duo The Brunettes released their debut full-length on Lil’ Chief Records, 12 tracks of charming and sweeping chamber rock bursting with sugar-coated riffs and flirty back-and-forth vocals between Jonathan Bree and Heather Mansfield.  Tracks like Cupid and Dancefloor shake and jive like a lost Tommy James b-side from 1968, but their twee roots keep it 100% unique.

I love reissues like these, similar to long lost treasures from Light in the Attic’s vaults, turning us onto a place and time that few of us knew existed.  Soul Step Records is blessing us with the first vinyl issue of this solid record and they only have 300 copies of the album on white and blue splatter vinyl.  I’ve been told that they’re going fast, so check out the entire album below and make a decision soon!
