Sufjan has a knack for writing about anything and everything without limitation and still turn it into a beautiful song. He’s tackled subjects ranging from his abandonment from his mother, serial killers, girlfriends with terminal diseases, struggling with religion and faith, to name a few, and now… Tonya Harding, which seems oddly coincidental considering the release of I, Tonya this weekend and the Winter Olympics approaching in February. With that said, Sufjan has been wanting to write about her since 1994 when all the shit hit the fan, stating that he composed and wrote the song “with dignity and grace, to pull back the ridiculous tabloid fodder and take stock of the real story of this strange and magnificent American hero.” Whether you like her, hate her, or just fascinated with it all, these two versions of the song are magnificent.
