Stars are undoubtedly one of my favorite pop bands going today. This Montreal 5 piece crafts gorgeous pop music with graceful melodies, string arrangements, adroitly placed synthesized instrumentation, and lively percussion. What makes Stars a little unique is that they have two lead vocalists, who take turns on singing and sometimes even having Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan sing in unison, or even role play in songs which add an unwonted theatrical dynamic. Evan Cranley, Chris Seligman, and Pat McGee of course add a good chunk of the fantastic backing instrumentation to these two with Evan and Chris being multi-instrumentalists, while Pat is at the helm of the percussion/drums. I’d also venture to say they’re one of the best live bands going as well – I’ll say that any day of the week. See them live if you have a chance – I’ve seen them three times now, and I’ll see them many times more if I can. Enough of my rambling, though. The A-Side “Wishful” has Amy’s angelic voice singing about an admiration for a special somebody, over a brooding, yet energetic, bit of instrumentation. “The Light” has melancholic guitar and bass work supplanting Torquil’s delightfully English-tinged voice – reminiscent of a Nightsongs-era Stars. Check out both these songs below via Soundcloud and see what you think of them. Cheers!
