RIYL: Nick Lowe, Belle & Sebastian, Spooky Mansion

Label: Soul Step Records

Singer. Songwriter. Multi-instrumentalist. His name is Matt Duncan and he can write a hook within the deepest caverns of REM sleep. Effortlessly catchy and ridiculously talented, Mr. Duncan dips his toes into R&B, indie rock, synth pop and plenty of the funky stuff. He once rearranged Everlong into a yacht rock-inspired brassy banger and permanently changed the way I heard the original version.

And now he’s back with a couple of new tunes versatile enough to soundtrack your first Fall stroll through the neighborhood or blasting from your cabin cruiser as you jump the waves. A-side Who Are You On Your Own is a throwback to your favorite soft rock from the 70s, a breezy head nodder with a jazzy backbeat. B-side State Bird turns the heat up a notch with silky synth leads and a punchy rhythm and brass section. I can practically hear the champagne bottles popping in that one.

As is the case with all of their releases, the majority of the red vinyl has already been sold to Soul Step Records’ subscribers, but by great fortune from the vinyl gods, there are still some remaining copies. It’s $8, man! It’s limited to just 100 copies, man! Whatchu afraid of, maaaan? Listen to both tracks below and grab the wax after the ‘buy’ link.
