RIYL: Van Dyke Parks, Kevin Ayers, Foxygen

Label: Sacred Bones

Chances are high that you’ve seen Caleb Landry Jones on a film or a television show over the last 10-12 years. Best known as Red Wilby in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Jeremy Arbitage in Get Out or as Banshee in X-Men: First Class, Mr. Jones has quite the resume. He was even the drummer in Landry Clarke’s fictional band Crucifictorious in the tv show Friday Night Lights. He also happens to be a remarkably gifted songwriter, and his brand new debut record The Mother Stone should muzzle any and all doubters.

The album opener Flag Day/Mother Stone is a beautifully schizophrenic pop number, the first half a bombastic instrumental from the school of Van Dyke Parks’ Song Cycle or Foxygen’s Hang, the second half a swaying, orchestral rock tune hinting at “weird era” Beatles and the moodier side of Kevin Morby. Honestly, it’s one of the coolest, most surprising songs I’ve heard in quite some time. 7 1/2 minutes of barely categorizable, but remarkably palatable pop music. Can’t wait to hear this whole thing! It’s gonna be outrageous.

The rarest variant, limited to a mere 150 copies, is Sacred Bones’ subscription-only club edish on “rainbow sherbet” vinyl. Available to all, however, is the baby blue variant limited to 250 copies. That one will run you $32 and you can get that after the ‘buy’ link. Vinyl Me, Please is also carrying a splatter variant limited to 300 copies for $29 that you can grab HERE.
