RIYL: Syd Barrett, Kevin Ayers, The Babe Rainbow, PAINT
Label: Mexican Summer
Even though their instaclassic 2012 debut LP catapulted the band into the forefront of the surf psych scene of the last decade, Allah-Las have worked hard at avoiding that pigeonhole at all costs. Traces of Byrds-influenced jangly guitar licks could be found on 2014’s Worship the Sun, but for the most part, Allah-Las appear uninterested in treading the same territory.¬† Los Angeles is still their muse, but their influences are meandering through different avenues of the vast psychedelic landscape.
Newest single In the Air is a psych collage, drawing from Paisley Underground-tinged guitar tones and vocal harmonies, the off-kilter experimentalism of Flying Nun’s golden era as well as the playful surrealism from late 60s pop outliers like Kevin Ayers and Syd Barrett.
