RIYL: ... you know who this is, right?
Label: Newbury Comics
Elliott Smith (R.I.P.) – a man who left this (cruel) world too soon and made his mark on music, indie and otherwise, for time immemorial. Whether it was by his own hands, or by another actor, is still up for debate, but it’s a tragedy nonetheless. Roman Candle marked his full-length solo debut to the world, and it came out over twenty-two years ago. Smith combined the world of wistful folk music with the emotional despair of emo – something that was being realized at the time of this release. Emo, at the time, was often accompanied with a hardcore background but Smith showed you didn’t need an artillery to convey intensity of his subject matter. Roman Candle is very much an encapsulation of the 90s aesthete, but it’s aged quite well as you’ll soon find. “I don’t know Elliott Smith,” you say? You’re here – you at least know the name of Elliott Smith. The guy played at the Oscars, even. I don’t think I need to elaborate on who he is any further… If you don’t know him, for some strange reason, remedy this now by listening to Roman Candle below via the Bandcamp player and see what you think of it. Cheers!
