RIYL: Thelonius Monk, Bob James, Herbie Hancock

Label: self-released

Southeast Londoners Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams make up the primary members of Yussef Kamaal, an experimental jazz outfit influenced by everything from Thelonius Monk’s singular piano strut to Digable Planets’ jazz funk samples to the UK jungle, grime and broken beat scene.  If you dig early jazz fusion and the warm sounds of the Yamaha YC-30 and the Rhodes, stay awhile and get Black Focus into your ears.

First single Yo Chavez conjures up Bob James’ famous organ tones from his highly-sampled Nautilus, but glides along a smooth, galactic synth lead that propels the group into uncharted waters.  It’s as sexy as it is eerie, and while the group nods to their jazz forefathers, they’ve debuted a fully realized sound that’s all their own.

White vinyl copies await you after the ‘buy’ link.  Stay sexy.
