RIYL: Johannesburg’s jazz, afro funk and experimental electro scenes
Label: Mushroom Hour Half Hour
SPAZA is an ever-evolving project from Johannesberg, South Africa assembled from the city’s jazz, afro funk and experimental electro scenes. The lineup changes often with no permanent members and the sessions are highly improvisational and experimental. This new self-titled project is a taste of their world, and I assure you it’s like nothing you’ve ever heard. First available track Ice Squinchies: Waiting For You demonstrates their expert improvisational technique, winding and twisting through an extensively manipulated vocal arrangement as a minimal bass, synth and violin foundation carry the track forward. The results are galactic, a remarkably unique, unearthly and singular sound. If you told me that we uncovered this in a floating capsule near Neptune, I’d believe it.
Their label, Mushroom Hour Half Hour, has a first pressing of the record limited to 800 copies. Check out Ice Squinchies below. If you dig, pick up a copy of the rekkid after the ‘buy’ link. These are shipping from overseas, so the total price will reflect that.
