Latin percussionist Robin Jones had a touched pair of hands and an enviable resumè, playing in quintets with Don Rendell, Esmond Selwyn, George Haslam and many others. In 1972, he assembled his own super group for a one-off album of latin jazz fusion burners. Among the seven monumental musicians, John Porter’s keyboard work, Wes Claudius’ trumpet and Olaf Vas’ saxophone and flute playing elevated Jones’ percussion to godlike levels and helped take the album to legendary status. You know the story though by now. While influential to a core following upon its release, its true influence wasn’t felt until decades later as young crate diggers began discovering the record and sampling its warm grooves.
The OG goes for mucho dinero as you’d expect, so this new reissue is truly a gift for the listeners who always wanted to hear it on wax without forking over their kids’ college tuition.
