RIYL: Yussef Kamaal, Flying Lotus, Blue Lab Beats
Label: Warp Records
The already-legendary Kamaal Williams dropped jaws in 2016 with the instaclassic jazz fusion debut Black Focus, a genre rewrite and all-around boundary pusher. Alongside Yussef Dayes, their aptly named project Yusseff Kamaal dissipated as quick as it began, leaving Kamaal on his own to pursue his own visions. In 2018, he debuted as a solo artist with The Return, a mix of warbled synths, steamed-up funk and grooved-out slow jams. Kamaal’s sultry keyboard technique was still on full display, but he’d already moved onto other styles, owing as much to blaxploitation soundtracks as he did to his jazz forefathers.
Wu Hen, his new sophomore effort, comes out this July. The first available track One More Time demonstrates his inability to stay confined within any genre, a hybrid of new wavy keyboard solos and cool, smoky saxophones. Really, if you dug anything about any of his past work, you’re gonna flip for this too. Mute Records is producing 2000 slabs of silver vinyl and 3000 slabs of red, so there’s probably no need to rush. Rough Trade, however, has an additional cool item for their bundle, a cassette of an hour-long set at Dekmantel Festival. Check that one out after the ‘buy’ link. If those sell out, pick up the red wax from any number of online distros.
