When asked about his new full-length Dialectic Soul, South African jazz drummer Asher Gamedze says, “Fundamentally, it is about the reclamation of the historical imperative. It is about the dialect of the soul & the spirit while it moves through history. The soul is dialectic. Motion is imperative. We keep moving.” Alongside Asher Gamedze on drums is Thembinkosi Mavimbela (bass), Buddy Wells (tenor sax), Robin Fassie-Kock (trumpet) and Nono Nkoane on vocals. This is an ensemble to be reckoned with, ladies and gents. In one beat, the band can go from a swing into an all-out brawl, creating a space to feel every emotion under the sun. Anger, sadness, relief, elation and everything in between. Then in one breath, Nkoane’s vocal arrangements can stop time. It’s a wonderful listen if you have an hour to spare.
