RIYL: Jeff Parker, Irreversible Entanglements, Chicago Underground Quartet

Label: International Anthem

“Telepathic Afro-Caribbean improvisational trumpet-and-percussion duo Aquiles Navarro & Tcheser Holmes are longtime friends, collaborators, and tireless hustlers on the creative music scenes of New York City.” – International Anthem

That’s about all I need to read to get my blood pumping. Navarro and Holmes first hit my eardrums as members of free jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements, a multi-faceted sound consisting of brass and percussion-heavy jazz with poetry over the top. Amazing stuff. Navarro and Holmes’ new project is diving further into their Latin and Afro-Caribbean foundations, so expect some sensational trumpet and drum battles anointed in gorgeous studio experimentation. First track Pueblo reminds me of my favorite parts from Miles’ Bitches Brew, a swirling fusion of dance, psych and jazz immersed in reverb. Holy hell, it’s good. I just wish it was longer!

Chicago jazz label International Anthem has been on fire the past few years. Honestly, there isn’t a bad note in their recent discography, from Makaya McCraven to Jeff Parker to Anteloper. Don’t miss out on the limited ‘aqua dorado’ colored vinyl! It’s probably gonna go pretty quick as there are only 444 copies to go around. Listen to Pueblo below and grab a slab after the ‘buy’ link.
