RIYL: indie rock that's actually interesting
Bands like Wax Fang are making indie rock interesting again. A lot of the indie rock from the 00s (and when it crops up, seemingly, now…) can’t seem to escape the monotony in its meta. Indie rock bands will stick to a simple formula of rhythm/lead guitar, bass, drums, and vocals, and there’s only so many iterations you can take of that recipe before everything starts to sound the same to you. You become dissatisfied with the indie rock “metagame,” and start branching outwards, deeper, maybe your taste just becomes stranger… Victory Laps has rock at its core, but to just call it that is a disservice. The lead single, “Pusher,” is more like a puncher. The tapestry of tight percussion, soaring strings, brazen synthesizer, and soulful vocals allow the six minute run time to not feel like a chore to listen to, and the climax makes it all worthwhile. Listen to “Pusher” below via the YouTube stream and see what you think of it. Cheers!
Wax Fang's fourth album, Victory Laps, will be released May 5, 2017 on 100 limited edition transparent red vinyl.
Vinyl includes an MP3 download.
All pre-orders will ship April 24th, 2017.
