RIYL: Phoenix, Generationals, early MGMT

Label: self-released

Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Matt Koenig has been teasing out singles and EPs for a few years, sculpting and finessing his own unique brand of chill, two scoops of dreamy psych, a pinch of nu-soul and r&b and a heaping helping of delectable funk. If Nile Rodgers teamed up with Neon Indian’s Alan Palomo and hired Phoenix to be their backing band, you’d get The Undercover Dream Lovers.

Latest single You Don’t Have to Be Lonely throbs with carefree disco abandon, thrusting along an addicting synth lick that could single-handedly usher in an early summer. Meanwhile, A Way Out vibes over a bass and guitar combo from the University of CHIC, a perfect duo to lift Koenig’s smooth falsetto harmonies. Check those tracks out below and grab a slab of cherry red vinyl after the ‘buy’ link.
